FEATURE: By Derek McLean, Head of Technology Solutions at STANLEY Security GB

Over half of all companies in the Fortune 500* have gone bankrupt, been acquired or ceased to exist since the beginning of the millennia.  What’s more, it’s predicted that a further 40% will follow the same path in the next decade.  Never, it would seem, has the phrase ‘Innovate or Die!’ been more apt.

Stanley Black & Decker (SWK), of which STANLEY Security is a division, has been a Fortune 500 company* for ten proud years and we have no intention of being one of the unfortunate 40%.  But to be a successful company, especially in the technology field, you can’t sit still; you have to innovate.

I think it’s fair to say that the security industry as a whole hasn’t been the most innovative sector in the past.  New product launches have invariably followed along the ‘more of the same’ path – higher resolution cameras, easier to install door entry systems, faster access control readers, and so on.  But, like the ‘no man is an island’ saying goes, industries no longer operate in isolation either.  The Internet of Things (IoT) has changed all that!  It’s more than just a blurring of the edges but represents a genuine sea change with companies traditionally associated with consumer electronics, for example, realising there are opportunities to be had in B2B fields.

For some organisations, a siege mentality prevails.  They think if they batten down the hatches these newcomers will eventually go away.  It’s one option I guess, but not one we subscribe to.

For STANLEY Security, this all means one thing: opportunity!  These are exciting times for our industry and we are in the vanguard of innovation.  We are looking at how we can do things differently, right across the business, from our internal processes to innovative product thinking.  We’re asking questions; for example, do we need another new CCTV camera, or can we do something more innovative with a camera?  This often means working with companies and innovators outside of our industry.  We have much to learn from them and vice versa.  We’re breaking free from our industry’s self imposed silo and it feels exhilarating!

Stanley Security Innovations Days

We’re also working more closely with customers.  We run regular 'Innovation Days' which are aimed at engaging existing and potential customers in new technologies we are working on at an early stage.  It’s a two way street: we get invaluable customer input on product design and the customer gets the opportunity to help create a solution to their specific needs without any financial investment.

Innovation Days vary in their nature, depending on the technology being examined and the market they are suited to.  For a recent Innovation Day aimed at the banking sector we had eight partners presenting and 20 customers present, all of whom were fully engaged with the process.

Innovation Days enable us to take more of a partnership approach, working collaboratively with technology companies and customers.  We can be creative, whether it’s disrupting an existing market or creating a brand new one.  It also enables us to separate true innovation from hype, which makes for long term success (I recently heard of an App that allows you to control your bathroom fan from your phone – now if that isn’t ridiculous hype I don’t know what is!).

Innovation is the life blood of a technology company such as STANLEY Security.

But let’s leave the last words on the subject matter to that famous children’s author Dr. Seuss: “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try.”
