Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and Batteries

Collection and Recycling Arrangements within STANLEY Security.

Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and implementing regulations, when customers buy new electrical and electronic equipment from STANLEY Security they are entitled to:

  • send old equipment for recycling on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis (this varies depending on the country)
  • send the new equipment back for recycling when this ultimately becomes waste

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in the United Kingdom

Under the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, for old equipment that you have bought before August 2005 which is being replaced on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis by the purchase of new STANLEY Security equipment, STANLEY Security is required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of the old equipment. The old equipment that your new purchase from STANLEY Security replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the UK WEEE Regulations, STANLEY Security is also required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from STANLEY Security after August 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.

When removing redundant electronic equipment or back-up batteries from a customer’s premises STANLEY Security will ensure compliance with the relevant environmental legislation, this includes;

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations – Electronic Fire and Security equipment; system controls, power supplies and system devices would be subject to this legislation. Electrical waste: retailer and distributor responsibilities

Batteries Directive - Multiple battery types are used to operate or back up electronic fire and security systems, these include; Lead Acid, Alkaline. When these batteries come to the end of their life they will be replaced and removed from site. Environmental permitting guidance: Waste batteries and accumulators directive

Hazardous Waste Regulations – batteries and some electronic components contain hazardous waste, which is essentially waste that contains hazardous properties. Therefore STANLEY Security will ensure that the removal, transportation, treatment process is managed effectively to ensure that no harm is environment and human health. Hazardous waste

Waste Carriers Licence and Hazardous Waste Registration.

STANLEY Security has a Waste Carriers licence which allows it vehicle fleet to transport batteries and electronic waste from a customer’s premises to the local Stanley office. In addition each STANLEY Security office (with the exception of Paisley) is register to store Hazardous Waste.

Traceability of Waste Removed from a Customers Site

To ensure that STANLEY Security have traceability of hazardous waste (including batteries and WEEE) leaving a customer’s premises and returning to a Stanley premises a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note (HWCN) is completed. This note is completed either on a PDA or on a paper docket.

The HWCN details the items being removed from site and STANLEY personnel will ask the customer to sign the PDA / docket as a record that the waste is leaving their premises. A copy of the docket will be left with the customer or emailed to the customer.

Once waste is returned to the local STANLEY office it is safely stored ready for collection by licensed waste management company.

STANLEY Security use specialist waste management who are registered with the Environment Agency to treat and recycle batteries and electronic waste.

WEEE Reporting Recycling Data for STANLEY Security Equipment in the United Kingdom

Under Section 27 of the WEEE Regulations, information on the quantities and categories of STANLEY Security electrical and electronic equipment put on the market, reused, recycled and recovered within the UK must be reported by the end of each compliance period.

The first WEEE recycling report will cover January-June 2015. Information in the recycling data report will be summarised on the STANLEY Security website when it becomes available.
